Student Welfare
At Chobham, the physical and emotional wellbeing of our students is an absolute priority. It is important to us that all students are known as individuals and given individual time and attention. We understand that during the course of their career at Chobham, many of our students will encounter challenges in their lives which necessitate additional support which we provide in as comprehensive and professional manner as possible.
We are also very mindful of stresses and pressures which may affect our student body at key times in their school careers such as the run up to examinations or preparation for interviews in Year 11 or in the sixth form. Students may feel pressure at these times and we wish to equip them with strategies to help them cope as well as they can.
Some of the ways in which we promote and help manage student wellbeing are:
- Developing excellent working relationships between students and staff so that students feel able to share difficulties and seek support.
- Tutor group and year group systems which help build secure and trusting smaller communities within the Academy. In these environments, students feel more secure and more able to express themselves, ask questions and seek the support of peers and staff.
- Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) lessons are part of our core curriculum.
- In our half termly Values Days students learn about PSHE themes in depth and also develop their social and communication skills.
- Counselling, external mentoring and peer mentoring programmes for students
- A highly qualified safeguarding team
- A study support programme and structured, personalised preparation for examinations
- A wide range of exercise and relaxation opportunities including; boxing, martial arts and mindfulness
- Students trained as peer mentors
- A dedicated wellbeing room in which meetings and other activities can take place
- Experience of mindfulness and relaxation techniques for all students so that they are able to use these methods when feeling under pressure.

Attendance and Punctuality
Good attendance is central to every child’s success at school. Research repeatedly shows that attendance is the single most important factor in determining how young people will achieve at school. Put simply, students from Years 7-13 learn more in lessons with their teachers than they do anywhere else. Here at Chobham Academy we are consistently above 96% for attendance and therefore our students are maximising their learning opportunities throughout the academy year.
Parents have a vital role to play in helping their children get to school on time. Parents can help their children by ensuring they have set an alarm before they go to bed and packed their bag the night before school. Uniform should also be set out ready the night before it is needed. We understand that many of our parents leave early for work, but if possible if parents can help by making sure their child leaves for school on time. If you require any support with regards to attendance and punctuality then contact our attendance team on attendance@chobhamacademy.org.uk.
We know that many of our students need a secure, caring and well organised learning environment to enable them to make progress.â¯Therefore we use a triage system for our students where good attendance is a real challenge. We work in collaboration with parents, safeguarding, SEND and external agencies to ensure that we are removing any barriers to good attendance in the best interests of the student.

Triage System
We also have a Triage System embedded into our attendance monitoring which ensures that the key stakeholders are sharing information that allows a profile of a student to be formed, which then influences the key decisions made on the personalised support programme for students with poor attendance. The profile is formed by accessing data on the following areas – behaviour, attendance, SEND and safeguarding.
